In the bedroom, and in the news...

Our Thanksgiving was really really nice. We made the long trek across town (5 whole minutes!) to spend the day at Aaron's parents house. Aar's mom Barb makes a great spread. This was the first year without Mom Mom, Aaron's grandmother. Sad to think about...but Aaron's dad Skip kept things happy and light by carrying a framed photo of Mom Mom and the grandkids room to room with us. She got the spot at the end of the table, watched some football with us...it was a great dinner and felt really good to just sit back for a while with family.

Back home in our new bedroom. Nothing is hung up yet. But I love seeing little bits gathered. Some ideas for color and mood. I'm going with simple and spare. But right now we've got far too much on our plates to worry about decorating the bedroom. I know it will happen soon enough. At this point I'm just so happy to be up there. The new cozy nest is such great medicine right now. So comfortable and calm.

It really is incredible to see what a little paint, some new curtains, a candle, and carpet can do. I'm so thankful for the little things.

It was so great to see this article in the newspaper on Thanksgiving morning... in New Jersey's Star Ledger. The article is also online. It's a story about me and Aaron and this little blog and the awareness raised about those suffering in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. It's just such a great tribute to the amazing generous kind people who have sent support and continue to send support. We will continue to do our part and spread the love that comes our way.

It's so weird to take pictures of yourself. I never ever do. This is me...awkward, weird me. I see these and I ask myself: do I really look like that? I don't remember making those strange faces?

I promise I wasn't about to cry here although it may look like it...ha! Those eyes...they look worried or concerned. But how about my hair bow?! Isn't it lovely? It's by Sunshine & Carousels. I adore evvverything Erin makes!

Ok, that's all for now! I hope you had a lovely holiday and have a fantastic weekend.

Thankful

I've always loved the phrase "Stop and smell the roses"... and try my best to live by it in my day to day life. And that's what I love about Thanksgiving. It's a day that is dedicated to the stop and smell the roses sentiment. All of these wonderful people who we are surrounded by in our lives...all of the magical moments we share...the art we get to admire or get to make with our own hands...the laughs we share...the work that we do...and I mean the work that satisfies us...and the gifts we give each other...the selfless acts of charity that I've seen in the past few weeks alone are enough to last me a lifetime...our families and friends...our adorable pups...the kindness of strangers.
Today is the day to reflect on all of that. And this year I think I've got more goodness to reflect on than any other year of my life leading up to this. In the wake of a disastrous event I got to bear witness to something that I actually knew all along. And that is the fact that I've got some of the most amazing friends a girl could dream of. And let me amend that statement...because I know that Aaron feels exactly the same as I do. WE, me & Aaron, have got the most amazing friends...and we always knew this. What I mean to say is that you guys didn't surprise us...we always thought the world of you...we always knew the depth of your love and friendship. But still, you sure did WOW us. You impressed the heck out of us and made us feel like a million bucks. We felt cared for...needed, wanted, loved. And we really cannot thank you enough for that. It just might be the greatest gift that one can receive.
So, Thank You. From the bottom of our hearts. This day is dedicated to all of you.
Happy Thanksgiving
xoxo, Jenny... & Aaron

life lately

So life lately...

Trying to get things back to normal but also trying to start anew. When you go through any type of trauma it's important to learn, grow, and change afterward. The last thing you want to do is pretend that nothing happened. Being in denial is the breeding ground for PTSD. So instead, embrace the mess, clean up, and try to improve. Even if your improvements are small, trivial...something like redecorating can be amazingly therapeutic.
For us, we used the flood downstairs as our opportunity for finally moving to our permanent upstairs bedroom. Our downstairs tiny bedroom was flooded and we had to rip up the soaked carpet tiles and prepare to move our bed and everything upstairs. The upstairs room was pretty much a square box used for storage. And since the floors were linoleum we needed to lay down some carpet. We normally would go with hardwood floors but after the storm and the cold and the constant wet muddy socks...carpeting seemed like such a cozy idea for the bedroom. So we first ordered some carpet tiles from Lowes...and when they arrived a week later we were absolutely horrified by the quality. So so thin and coarse and gross...worse than astro turf. But I can't denounce carpet tiles outright. The last ones that we got from Home Depot were much nicer. But these ones from Lowes...we couldn't return them quick enough!

So then we went to our local carpet mill after seeing their endearing local commercials with the owner's young sons holding rolls of carpet and saying things like "Reliable". Well we went in, found some good carpet, got a great price, and we really liked the people there...and what sealed the deal is that they said they could install within the next 48 hours. Perfect. The installers showed up the other day and were completely done in under 45 minutes. The first thing we did was carry the dogs upstairs and show them their new bedroom. We knew they'd love it. Every time they visit grandma and grandpa's house they run around on the carpet like maniacs. Our little chubby pumpkin Jack flips out, runs circles around his big brother Carlos. Normally, Jack spends the entire day under blankies...but put him on some carpet and you've got a Whirling Dervish. He'll be a skinny pumpkin in no time!

So, the new bedroom is a big departure for us decor wise. We usually go with lighter colors, pastels, lots of white. But we went with a gray on gray on gray color palette for the new bedroom. We were trying to channel the feeling of a dimly lit, cozy hotel room. A place to shut out the world and just sleep. And so far it feels amazing. We have yet to actually decorate...it's just the bones right now...but it'll all come together eventually. Maybe not right away though. We've got way too much on our plate to worry about the little details.

Even though the news channels have moved on from the story of Hurricane Sandy, the reality is still bleak and tragic for a whole lot of our neighbors. There are many people who are still without power. Just a block over we can still hear a generator going. So many families are without homes. We walked around our small town and entire neighborhoods are empty...every house gutted...the contents, the walls and floors are in piles out on the streets in front. We've been bringing goods to our American Legion. They are still in need of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products...also underwear and socks. And now with the holidays approaching the focus is on food and utensils. Plastic forks, spoons, and knives...paper plates, cups...these are in demand right now. And The Food Bank of Monmouth County will be in desperate need of donations as well. They do great work. So if you'd like to help out, give them a visit and see how you can.

My friend Amanda from The Fancy Lady Gourmet , who is also a Jersey girl...well, she is just amazing and my heart goes out to her and her family. She lost her uncle in the storm and through this heartbreak she still found it in her heart to take the time and energy to bake and send us a BIG box of her famous cookies...and donations for our community. I've blogged about Amanda and her amazing beautiful and delicious cookies before. I was floored when her package arrived.

These photos are just so so heartbreaking. I feel dizzy, and my heart pounds when I look at them. This is an aerial shot of Ortley Beach. And below is the exact same view after the storm.

Devastated. All of those families are displaced...those memories, collections, living rooms, and kitchens, and holidays...All gone.

Today we took another walk around our little town and surveyed the gigantic clean up effort. So much of the town was under water and the muddy residue remains. We're lucky that it isn't summertime because in the heat I'm sure the place would be so so stinky. In any empty lots there are piles of the debris from all over town. The objects that once were the heart and souls of so many family's homes are now not even recognizable.
But it was a beautiful day weather wise and you really do get a sense of people making the best of things. Trying to rebuild and move on and make life better a day at a time. I know we are. Big hugs to all of you who have helped us along the way. You could never understand just how much your help means to us.

Friday Favorites: vintage photobooth photos

vintage photobooth photo
(source)

It feels really good to be getting back into the groove after all the chaos resulting from the storm. It's time once again for Friday Favorites! This week I'm focusing on one of my absolute favorite collectibles...the vintage photo booth photo. I've got a drawer full of them but just because they're in a drawer doesn't mean that they're just hoarded away for my eyes only. Nope, the drawer is simply where the originals stay for safe keeping. I'm happy to say that this is one collectible that gets a whole lot of mileage in my hands. Vintage photobooth pics are amazing source material. We color copy them, blow them up to nice portrait size, and then embellish them with paint. The transformation is fabulous! You'll see below our portraits of Sadie and Molly...we did those a while back but just recently I was pulling out a bunch of inspiration for our new bedroom and those came to mind...they are in the shop now as prints. We're going with grays, and sepia tones, some pewter, metal, parchment...but we'll also be bringing in some gorgeous rose studies and all the colors that inhabit those. So I thought these old photo booth pics would fit in perfectly. And when embellished with paint you can take them in whatever direction you please as far as color palette goes.

We'll definitely be putting together a class involving these. So try to gather some of your faves if you're interested...or start a collection now. They are small and usually very affordable at flea markets etc...It's all about the great things you can do with these pretty gals.
Thanks so so much for joining me in my first Friday back! Three cheers for normalcy!

My heart is full

First of all, I really have to apologize for not posting sooner. Of course my sparse blogging isn't without good reason. We are still very much immersed in recovering from the ubiquitous Hurricane Sandy. And so is everyone around us. It's an all-consuming tragedy. So thats why I'm so surprised to hear from my Facebook friends across the country that Hurricane Sandy isn't exactly front page news anymore. I mean, I get it...life must go on. And me and Aaron are really trying to get ours back in order. We're poring over invoices, making supply lists, cleaning and organizing the studio, and diligently trying to catch up on the thousand or so emails! But there's only so much we can do with our entire house turned upside down. As I stated prior, our ground floor was flooded and all of the floors need to be ripped up and replaced. There are a bunch of other things as well, but this is the most pressing issue...with the ticking time bomb of mold setting in, and the stink of the floorboards growing worse each day. And we've met with an insurance guy, and a fema gal, but we have yet to meet with the "flood guy" (that's all I've been calling him.) Yes, the "flood guy" isn't scheduled to be here for another ten days! And he is who stands between us and new floors. We can't rip these ones out until we get approved for the funds by the insurance company...and the "flood guy". So, with that on our minds every waking minute we are still trying hard to move forward and get back into some heavy duty creativity. We are inspired and on fire!
But, being proud New Jerseyans, here's one thing we're not going to do: We are not going to move forward and forget all about our friends and neighbors who lost everything.  And apparently, so many of you amazing people share our feelings. Holy cow! The outpouring of love and support for Sandy victims just brings me to tears! I am very active on Facebook. I've surpassed the amount of Facebook friends that one can acquire, so in order to continue accepting friend requests I actually had to create a second Jenny Holiday page.
Ok, so I have been updating my Facebook page pretty frequently after finally getting our power back on a week after the storm. I've just been letting everyone know exactly what happened to us and I've been sharing some pics of the aftermath in our small town and the surrounding communities. Right away my Facebook friends contacted me. First, they wanted to thank me for sharing these stories because they said the Hurricane Sandy coverage had pretty much disappeared from the national news. Being in the center of it all, it's hard to believe that people all over the country aren't hearing about our struggle each and every day. But, like I said...life must go on.
And once again...my Facebook friends were amazing and stated loud and clear that they weren't going to just let "life go on". Not if there are thousands of people without homes, or food, or heat, or clothes. People around me lost EVERYTHING! Instantly my Facebook friends had one question for me:
"Hey Jenny, what is your mailing address?"
So like any good friend would do...I provided them with the info they requested. Next thing I know...I was inundated with packages...packages shipped from all over the country. One amazing gal who lives close by actually drove here to meet us with a truck absolutely full of stuff. Facebook friends have been shopping on Walmart.com and Target.com and having the orders shipped directly to my address.  Me and Aaron have been in tears for days now...we just can't believe how amazing people can be in times like this.

Toothpaste and brushes by the case, paper towel rolls by the dozen, cleaning products, soap, dish and laundry detergent, bleach, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, hand sanitizer, all sorts of food, snacks, kids toys, art and craft supplies, garbage bags, razors, shaving cream, deodorant, tissues, sponges, rubber gloves, brand new clothes and shoes, and boots, jeez...just anything and everything that people who lost everything would need! Our hearts were and still are absolutely brimming with joy and we're so proud to have friends like this.

Once we got all this stuff we had to find out how to best distribute it to those who need it the most. We made a bunch of phone calls and looked around for places. And after some research we found that the absolute best venue was pretty much right around the corner form our house. Our local American Legion is set up as a "shopping center" for victims of Hurricane Sandy...but at this shopping center everything is free.

Me and Aaron got together with Aaron's parents, loaded up both of their cars and made several trips over there. When we showed up with our arms loaded with boxes, the volunteers at the American Legion were head over heels thrilled to see us! They were actually running low on goods and were about to start turning the needy people away...until we showed up! They thanked us again and again...and we told them that we're merely the delivery guys...all this stuff comes from our dear friends across the country... from our customers and collectors, people from the art and craft community, church groups, classic car clubs, bloggers...just a whole bunch of really amazing people!

More boxes keep on arriving and we hope that they'll continue to arrive in the days and weeks to come. And as long as they come we'll continue to get the goods into the hands of those who need it the most. It was so great to see. Literally, so much of the stuff didn't even get a chance to hit the table. Before we could even set it down there were people there just waiting to take it. It felt so so good! I went right home and relayed all of this to everyone who had sent us the stuff. I wish they could've been there to experience it first hand. I really can't thank everyone enough for making all of this possible.

Ok, I really just wanted to share this with you guys. I am absolutely exhausted and I can't wait to start having some "normal" days again. It's been one heck of a roller coaster. My emotions have been turned up to ten. I'll keep you guys posted and I'll check back in much more frequently. Thanks so much to all of you for all of your support! Me and Aaron really couldn't be more grateful.

Archy's garage / holiday video

My brother made this edit of Matt Archbold on my bike. This is just a test edit.

More snow than dirt

Joe, Travis, Austin and Curtis headed out to east fort rock (china hat) and found that it had snowed.. alot. So we went out anyway. Was some of the funniest dirt biking ever.
Joe found some dirt to sling around

 Travis getting loose...

 And Trav paying the piper.
Me playing it safe with a little slash

 Fun hill climb

Curtis's bike shit the bed like 20 miles away from the trucks, so we stashed it in the bushes and doubled him back.

We were all freezing so we made a fire before going back for the bike.
It was dark by the time we got to the broke bike. Good times and no one got too hurt.

Benjamin Moore Color Chats

Hello sweet friends! I'm stealing a moment away from cleaning and scrubbing and organizing to share some happy stuff! It couldn't have come at a better time! I think it may help to balance the scales a bit. We've been needing a bit of sunshine over here.  I am beyond honored to be featured on Benjamin Moore's Color Chats today. Our dear and longtime friend Jane Dagmi approached me with this super fun story idea. Rather than give it all away here I'd love for you to click over and read it for yourself!  Jane is one of the  most talented and beautiful ( inside and out) people we know! We met her over a decade ago when we owned a store. She was the Editor at large for Country Living magazine at the time. We had so much fun working with her over the years on some really fab projects.

I'm overcome with emotion right now.  Hard to put to words. The photo above was taken only a day or two before Sandy hit. We had no idea what would be heading our way. Those walls and floors will all need to be redone. But this little article just fills me with such hope and determination and love among a bajillion other things. It's a little reminder of who I am, who I was before the storm. Because I tell you...I am changed forever. I hope to think that it is for the better.
A Huge thank you to Jane. I love her to bits and this was a gift today.

And thank you to you dear readers for visiting me and checking on me and thinking of me!

Love from the NJ Shore!
